140 Proof

The folks on TV are talking about the "new" phenomena of people drinking hand sanitizer! It is 140 proof, and they are wondering WHY anyone would drink this horrible tasting and dangerous stuff! Why do alcoholics do anything they do? To non-alcoholic, sane people, it is beyond understanding I guess.

I woke up at 4:00 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. On Sunday, I went through the day with only 3 hours of sleep under my belt. It made for a long day, especially with a football game that was disappointing (to me), rambunctious grandchildren, and a daughter who likes to talk a lot and makes not much sense - but appears to be clean for the moment! But today? when I need to get to work? I slept until 7:00. I seem to be having some stomach issues this morning (details are being left out in consideration of my friends who read this) so I will proceed with my bath and getting dressed, but if this doesn't clear, I am not going to work.

I am glad this is a planned day off from running. Yesterday I ran five miles through not only snow and ice, but now because of the warm weather - we have puddles! Big honking puddles. My feet were soaked by the time I was done yesterday. The weather forecast for the week is warm weather, followed by SNOW on Friday. Please God, let this snow melt before we get more.

"the most compelling part of AA, the part that made me want to try this sober thing, was the laughter, the pure joy of the laughter that I heard only from sober alcoholics." -- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 333

but, think of the fresh breath!!! ok, bad, I know lol

I just cannot get over the conditions you will run in MC. I guess that's what makes a runner a runner... inspiring!

LOL...wht do alcoholics do the things they do? 'cause they can!
Like I ask myself why would anybody run anywhere if they didn't have to...
But I admire you for doing it! :)

I was recently taking three guys to a conference in Richmond, VA. Two of them are pretty new to sobriety (both in the backseat) and the other, my "brother pigeon" (riding shotgun). I was on my cellphone with someone who called to ask about traffic (they were just leaving about a half hour behind us) and, while on the phone, I suddenly thought I smelled Vodka. I used to drink just about any old kind of Vodka... often *not* top shelf stuff and the smell of it is unmistakable!

The guy on the phone sponsors both of the new guys in the backseat of my car (we wanted to make sure they got there before the first meeting started... and they did), so I was suddenly thinking (but did not say out loud), "one of his guys is DRINKING in the back of my Element!"

As you must be guessing by now, it was my bottle of hand sanitizer (which I am grateful to say, I have never ingested) and not Vodka. It was an interesting few minutes from smelling that smell to ending the phone call to looking back to see these guys happily sober and properly sanitized! :-)

I have heard of inmates drinking purell hand santitizer to get drunk and thy did. The radio station I listen to talked about it last Friday, and had one of their DJs (who does anything) try it, and it said it was sooo soappy and could not imagine why someone would do that. we know if un treated alcoholics are desperate enough, thy drink just about anything, from anywhere...
PLease feel better MC ((((((HUGS))))))) to ya

I was trying the old I can quit drinking on my own trick (an old alcoholic favorite) after a few trips to the emergency room my boyfriend told me that if I continued to drink I would need to find another place to live. So beings that my alcoholism caused me to be evicted from 4 apartments and no one would rent to me I decided to try quitting on my own. I quit drinking for 6 months, but I was on the marijuana mantainance program (another alcoholic favorite half measure) Then the fateful night that I had no pot. {the night happened to be Friday, why I thought Friday was any different than say, Monday morning is beyond me!) Anyway I thought its friday I need to get my groove on and while I was talking to my friend on the phone I went in the bathroom and saw that I had just purchased a half a liter of cheap mouthwash! So I thought I'll just have a little sippy-poo and my boyfriend will never know the better!( I was one of those alcoholics who could carry on a pretty normal conversation while in a blackout, is what "they've" told me) So I'm walking around in a Listerene haze for THREE DAYS!!!! I only meant to take a few sips I SWEAR!!! And the worst part of this whole bright idea is that I got the idea off of Dr. G the medical examiner. They found a dead body floating in a pond and as I was lifting my bong to my lips I told my boyfriend "boy this guy is F---ing crazy!" And then a few weeks later I took the cue from the dead guy! Now if that isn't insanity I don't know what is! I went to the E.R. and spent Sun. night there. I was unable to swallow my pride which I so couldn't afford and decided against going to detox. The Dr. told me it would take 72 hours to detox and boy was he ever wrong! It took SEVEN DAYS!!! SEVEN DAYS OF PURE FEAR, AGONY,TERROR,BEWILDERMENT,FRUSTRATION AND DESPAIR!!! SEVEN DAYS! IN THE SAME TIME IT TOOK GOD TO CREATE THE EARTH!!! I like to think of it like that because that was my last drunk. I could no longer deny my disease, because how many social drinkers do you know have a glass of mouthwash with their dinner? I don't think social drinkers drink mouthwash to relax or even catch a buzz. I thank God for those 7 days today. Because pain is the touchstone to progress. It took god 7 days to create what was soon to be me! It is so easy to forget about that last drunk but it aint easy to forget that last SEVEN day hangover! I thank God for my steady hand every morning. For real! Thank you God for allowing me to cut my clients hair without the shakes today! I think of that when I work on peoples hair! Thank you so much for your blogs Mary Christine! I read them everyday! And you have inspired my running as well! I get my fat ass out to wash park weather permitting everyday! I noticed it really helps especially if I am suffering from a noisy head! And my ass isnt as fat as it was when I came into the program August 7 2005. Today it feels good to be in my skin even if I'm not a size 5 yet! I decided to go ahead and love myself today! with the help of God and the AA program I can do that today! It's a miracle that I can love my sister whom I've had a terrible time with and I thought that was such a great miracle that God has blessed me with. and right when I thought he couldn't bless me anymore it was like he said wait a minute snoogs I have another miracle for you, you get to love yourself too! GOD BLESS!! THE SNOOGS!
